Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Bill (DCSF – pdf: 930KB) The government believes that new legislation to transform learning across generations will give people, ‘the best chance to reach their potential throughout their lives’. The Bill, announced by the Queen at the start of this parliamentary session, includes measures such as establishing a new Adult Advice and Careers Service (AACS), giving employees the right to request time off for training, and entitlement to free education for 0-5 year olds. Growing Inward and Indigenous Investment (Manchester Independent Economic Review – pdf: 5.1MB) Investment in the UK’s business infrastructure should focus towards supporting large domestic firms, according to a report by the Manchester Independent Economic Review. The report, comparing Manchester’s economy to the UK and Europe, suggests that improving the level of a region’s skills is the most important factor for encouraging investment from abroad.
Working Futures 2007-2017 (UKCES - pdf: 512KB) The number of people in self-employment is set to rise by 200,000 over the next decade, with three-quarters of those being female, according to a report by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. They believe that rising levels of immigration and changes to the age of retirement will necessitate a rise in employment - with business services, such as IT services, seeing the fastest growth. |
Growing good business/ social enterprise
The government has outlined a new program of support for the third sector, including a £16.5m fund for small and medium sized third sector organisations in deprived areas and up to £10m investment in a volunteer brokerage scheme for unemployed people. Launched to help third sector organisations through the recession, the package is worth up to £42.5m. In the media
The government has launched a new information campaign, ‘Real Help for Businesses Now’ encouraging businesses to take advantage of a range of business support packages offered through Business Link. A new carbon-reduction challenge has been launched by the Prime Minister, offering £10m in government funding to invest in innovative solutions to reducing the carbon footprint of existing buildings. Make Your Mark has submitted a response to the Interim Report by the Independent Review of the Primary Curriculum focusing on how enterprise should be embedded into the curriculum. |
